Rates

Editorial Rates:

We charge a per-word rate based on the document’s estimated level of difficulty. To arrive at an estimate, we need to see unedited passages from the beginning, the middle,  and the end of the document. If we find sample copy sent to us has been edited and then discover the rest of the document is significantly more difficult, we will adjust our rate accordingly.

Editing rate Definition Per-Word Rate
Light English is clear, on the native-speaker level. Grammar is mostly correct, and punctuation is mostly correct. Document is well organized and coherent. Little more than proofreading and light copyediting is needed. Formatting per a standard style manual* or a journal’s in-house style sheet is correct and consistent, in body copy and in documentation. Fiction: content is in final form, is formatted in Chicago style, and needs only proofreading and light copyediting. 2 cents
Moderate Clear, coherent English with few and predictable ESL issues. Vocabulary is generally accurate. Reasonably correct grammar, style, punctuation. Content may be moderately technical; facts should not need checking. Organization is reasonably coherent on the document, paragraph, and sentence levels. Standard style manual formatting is in place and consistent. Fiction: light to moderate advice on plotting, narrative, setting, description, characterization and the like is needed. Some formatting to fit Chicago style is needed. 3 cents
Difficult Significant and challenging ESL issues. Passages have been run through a machine translator. Passages need significant revision. Content is highly technical. Foreign language characters (e.g., Hanzi or Traditional Chinese, Hebrew) appear in narrative or tables. Tables and graphs need heavy formatting and revision. Organization is weak on the document or paragraph levels. Many sentences are unidiomatic. Advice on dissertation conventions or academic paper conventions is required, or extensive reformatting to fit a given style manual is required. Fiction: extensive advice on narrative, setting, description, characterization and the like is required; extensive formatting to fit Chicago style is required; coaching in how to write certain types of narrative, such as sex scenes or fight scenes, is needed. 4 cents
Very difficult Widespread ESL or literacy issues. Passages have been run through a machine translator. Content is extremely technical. Foreign language characters (e.g., Hanzi or Traditional Chinese, Hebrew, Cyrillic) appear in narrative or tables. Passages need heavy revision to the point of rewriting. Tables and graphs need heavy formatting and revision. Light fact-checking discovers errors of fact. Organization is weak on the document or paragraph levels. Many sentences are unidiomatic. Extensive advice on dissertation conventions, book conventions, Chicago style, APA style, MLA style, or scientific conventions is required, or revision by the editor to fit the desired conventions is required. Documentation or entire manuscript must be reformatted by us to fit a specified style manual. 6 cents
Fiction Fiction: We do not take on pieces of fiction that require heavy revision or detailed author instruction in the basic elements of plot, narrative, characterization, setting, description and the like. For stories, anthologies, and novels in near-final form, we will copyedit and also will advise, in a general way, on readability, literary technique, and content. 3 cents

* Standard style manuals include the Chicago Manual of Style (the standard for book publishing), American Psychological Association style, Modern Language Association style, and certain standard manuals preferred in specific sciences. Dissertation guidelines and in-house style sheets for journals and some book publishers may vary from these. Editorial rates may be higher if extensive reformatting of documentation or body copy is required.

Telephone conferences, in-person meetings, and extensive e-mailing will be charged at an additional hourly rate: $40 to $60/hour.

Payment is due in three increments: 1/3 at the beginning, 1/3 midway through the project, and 1/3 at the end.

Requirements for submitted documents:

Before we can edit a document, the author must prepare it for copyediting as described on our Submission Requirements page.

Please be aware that no one can guarantee an edited work will be accepted by an academic or trade publisher.

Indexing

For scholarly works, rates range from 1.05 cents to 1.75 cents per word, depending on difficulty of content, per-page density of entries, and turnaround time. Completion rates are usually about 10 to 15 days for works with up to 300 indexable pages and 15 to 20 days for 300 or more indexable pages.

Preparation for Print-on-Demand Publication

We offer formatting for print-on-demand (PoD) publication in two ways:

1) For simple texts with few graphics (tables, graphs, and images), we can prepare your copy in a standardized Word template developed by a graphic designer and intended for uncomplicated PoD projects.

2) For texts containing complex formatting and many graphics, we can refer you to a graphic designer who will lay out your text in InDesign and prepare the required PDFs.

We work with a PoD press located in Arizona and so can oversee production quickly and arrange printing and shipping as needed.

For PoD Preparation in a Word Template:

Standard costs for print-on-demand layout in a Word Template: $4.00/ finished page for simple, plain narrative without a lot of images. For formatting in Word’s “Styles,” add 50 cents per manuscript page.

Five images will be included in the $4/page rate. Beyond five, image management at $10/image.

Manuscripts should be formatted using Word’s “Styles” function for all heads, subheads, and paragraphs. We will insert the formatting for you at a surcharge of 50 cents a page (i.e., if we insert Styles formatting, cost for a 200-page manuscript would be $100 extra).

For for details on how to submit a book for this type of print-on-demand layout, please see our Submission Guidelines.

The use of a Word template for print-on-demand layout is most effective when the content consists mostly of unadorned text, with a minimum of images, drawings, graphs, tables, and pull-outs. If you have a more complex book, then you should consider having a graphic designer prepare the page layout using InDesign or Quark Xpress. We will be happy to refer you to one or more designers.

For PoD Preparation in a Page Layout Program

Cost: Depends on the designer. We will refer you to one or more designers; they will discuss fees depending on the size and complexity of your project.

Ideally, manuscripts should be formatted using Word’s “Styles” function for all heads, subheads, and paragraphs. If you are not familiar enough with Word to accomplish this, we will insert this formatting for you at a charge of 50 cents a page (i.e., if we insert Styles formatting, cost for a 200-page manuscript would be $100).

For details on how to submit a book for this type of print-on-demand layout, please see our Submission Guidelines.
